Watermelon - The Fruit of Health
The watermelon is said to have originated from the Kalahari Desert in central South Africa and surrounding Savannah zone.
Watermelons can survive under harsh climate such as intense sunlight, high temperatures,
and in arid regions because of many functional ingredients present in watermelon, including citrulline that has an antioxidative effect.
Expected Health Benefits
-
Reduces blood sugar level
Reduces triglycerides
Lowers blood pressure
Prevents dementia
Diuretic effect
Prevents diseases
-
-
Reduces blood sugar level
Watermelon has a low glycemic load, and its glycemic index, an index of the effect of food on blood glucose level, is the same as that of carrot.
-
-
Reduces Triglycerides
Watermelon is known to work in reducing triglycerides. The American Heart Association has also published statements on the relationship between watermelon and reduction of triglycerides.
-
-
Lowers Blood Pressure
A group of researchers at the University of Florida has announced that watermelon works to lower blood pressure. Citrulline and potassium are considered to bring about this effect.
-
-
Prevention of dementia
Dementia can be prevented by improving blood flow in the brain. It is essential to make the blood vessels strong, and intake of citrulline, lycopene, beta-carotene, and potassium contained in watermelon is effective for this purpose.
-
-
Diuretic effect
Watermelon contains plenty of water and potassium that excretes excess sodium from the body, and since watermelon also contains citrulline and arginine that produces urine, it is considered to be linked to this effect.
-
-
Prevention of diseases
Watermelon has the effect of alleviating inflammations linked to asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis, etc. This effect is considered to be due to the antioxidative effect of the ingredients in watermelon.
Expected Benefits for Beauty
-
Skin-whitening Effect
Moisturizing Effect
Effective for Spots and Sagging
Blood flow improvement Effect
Diet
-
Skin-whitening Effect
In the body converts beta-carotene contained in watermelon is converted to vitamin A which stimulates skin regeneration. Lycopene has antioxidative effect. These are said to keep the skin beautiful and fair.
Moisturizing Effect
If metabolism weakens, sebum is lost, and the skin becomes dry. Watermelon enables the intake of citrulline having a high moisturizing effect and vitamin C that strengthens the collagen fiber, which moisturizes the skin in turn.
-
Effective for Spots and Sagging
Vitamin C present in watermelon is useful for maintaining skin elasticity and is expected to be effective in preventing spots and sagging.
-
Blood flow improvement Effect
Swelling, which is likely to trouble women. The reason for swelling is poor blood circulation and accumulation of moisture in blood. Citrulline has the effect of improving blood circulation, which reduces swelling of the limbs.
-
Diet
Lycopene present in large amounts in watermelon works to burn body fat and suppress inflammatory reaction that promotes obesity. Though watermelon is sweet, calories are less due to which we can expect the body fat to reduce.
5 Good Ingredients
Citrulline
Citrulline, a type of amino acid effective for beauty and health.
Citrulline discovered in watermelon juice in 1930 that is expected to alleviate sensitivity to cold and swelling of the limbs,
improves metabolism, useful for recovery from fatigue, and vasodilation effect, etc.

- Watermelon and mango contain lycopene in large quantities as in tomato, and many studies have been conducted for its inhibitory effect on cancer as an antioxidant. There are different types of cancer such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gastric cancer, and rectal cancer, etc. Death due to myocardial infarction and stroke is mostly caused by thrombosis, a disease caused by aggregation of platelets in blood vessels, and watermelon has also been reported to have a strong inhibitory effect on aggregation of platelets that is linked to thrombus.
- Research of USDA (US Department of Agriculture)
- Watermelons were found to contain 40% more lycopene than raw tomatoes. When 11 men and 12 women consumed processed tomato juice that is better absorbed by the body than fresh tomatoes, and fresh watermelon juice, with same amount of lycopene in both juices, lycopene content in the blood was found to be the same. Thus, it was found that lycopene is effectively absorbed in the body even if fresh watermelons are consumed.
- the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
- According to a paper, lycopene content in the blood of patients with rectal cancer polyps was 35% lower than healthy subjects, and when lycopene quantity in the plasma is 70 mg or less, the risk is said to increase by 230%. The antioxidant ability of lycopene helps to protect the body from the damage to cells caused by reactive oxygen linked to heart disease. This suggests that DNA protection in leukocyte cells is one of the roles of lycopene.
- the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Jian L, Lee AH, etal.)
- According to the paper, foods such as watermelon and green tea with high content of lycopene can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression. From the survey results with 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 healthy people as subjects, the risk of prostate cancer reduced in 86% of the people who frequently drank green tea. Taking both watermelon and green tea was even more effective.

- Citrulline, which is plenty in watermelon is metabolized to arginine in the urea cycle of hepatocytes (liver cells) and used as a substrate for nitrogen oxides prepared by cells lined in blood vessels. Nitrogen oxide is involved in lowering blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels and immune functions. A report suggests that diabetes can be effectively treated by orally administering arginine to type 2 diabetic patients who are insulin resistant (Am J Physiol Endorich Metab. 2006 Nov; 291 (5): E906 ・12. Epub 2006 Jun 13). It is effective in treating erectile dysfunction by Viagra. .

- Citrulline metabolizes to several amino acids in the hepatocytes of the body and helps to heal cell divisions and wounds.

- Though citrulline is not an essential amino acid, it is used in the nitrogen oxidation system, and its ability as an antioxidant is very high. In regular and seedless watermelons, 16.6 and 20.3 mg/g dwt of citrulline was detected respectively, while the content in red watermelon was slightly less than yellow or orange watermelon with 7.4, 28.5, and 14.2 mg/g dwt of citrulline respectively. Though citrulline in the skin was more than flesh with values 24.7 and 16.7 mg/g dwt respectively, for raw weight, the content was higher content in the flesh with 1.3 and 1.9 mg/g dwt respectively.

- In 1930, citrulline was discovered by Wada as a new amino acid in watermelon, and it was named using the Latin name of watermelon Citrullus.
